‘WALK FOR WANTAGH sTUDENTS’ Walk-A-thon SET FOR jULY 12TH
Wantagh SOS Fundraising Organization Launches
What started as an informal living room gathering of a few
parents one evening launched as a full fledged 501(c)(3) charitable corporation,
named Wantagh SOS (Save Our Students), just days later. Wantagh SOS’s challenging goal is to raise
enough funds to reinstate all student
activities at all levels that resulted in cuts to student programs due to the
contingency school budget. Wantagh SOS
is very much an ‘all hands on deck’ grass roots organization that has already
garnered significant support from local politicians and businesses, several leading
community organizations, parents and students alike.
Following their kick-off rally at Wantagh High School
last Friday with over 400 in attendance, Wantagh SOS reported collecting
$66,506 towards their ambitious $650,000 goal.
Wantagh SOS chairperson Mary Hall commented “Right now we
are concentrating on the Walk-a-thon. We believe this can be the largest
fund raising event of the summer. Everyone inside and outside the Wantagh community is invited to participate.
We are encouraging any Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout troops, clubs, travel
teams, school teams, etc., to participate in the walk-a-thon
wearing their uniform or team jersey. This would make a statement
about our entire community, as well to the surrounding communities, that
anything is possible when we all join together. It will show that we are
united, that the kids in Wantagh
are important and that people care. If everyone
that visits www.wantaghsos.org website participates in the walk and
brings 2 friends, the Walk-a-thon will be a success.” While there are a series of
fundraising events planned, the largest anticipated community event is next
weekend’s Walk-A-Thon.
The ‘Walk for Wantagh Students’
Walk-A-Thon is set for Saturday July 12th, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. thanks to tremendous community
support. Wantagh SOS is asking anyone who can possibly participate
in this event to please do so. The walkers will start at Cedar Creek
Park and follow the bike
path down to the Jones Beach Restaurant (planned site of the new Trump on the
Ocean) and then back to Cedar Creek. Wantagh sports teams and
clubs are encouraged to walk together, wearing their jerseys or club tshirts. Family
participation is also encouraged to show support for our student community.
Wantagh SOS spokesperson Don Desroches stated, “Our goal is
2,000 people at $200 each to raise $400k.
This will only be possible if each of us gets involved.”
Sponsor forms are available online at www.wantaghsos.org and select local
stores. Please remember water bottles,
sunscreen and to send a car ahead if you don’t plan on walking both ways. Sponsor checks should be made out to Wantagh
SOS in advance of the The Walk for Wantagh Students. All monies will be collected before or the
morning of July 12th. “We
raised $66,506 and appreciate everyone’s efforts last Friday night, but we are
only 10% towards reaching our goal. We
still have a large undertaking ahead of us.
The Walk for Wantagh Students event would not be possible without the
support of our Legislators Dennis Dunne and Dave Denenberg,
the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce, the Wantagh American Legion and Wantagh Fire
Department. Thank you.” said Don Desroches.
